Zapotec Rugs from Mexico -
LargeThe artisan masters of Teotitlan del Valle are famous all over the world for their fine wool products elaborated on large wooden looms. To create a sheep wool tapete (rug) the following process takes place: First, the sheep is shaved and the wool is washed out at the nearest river. Once washed, it is then set out to dry with the heat of the sun. Preceding this process is the straightening of the raw fleece, aligning, and finally softening it. For the range of colors, natural and vegetable dyes are used as well as insect dyes such as the cochineal insect which produces red dyes. Other dyes come from indigo leaves for blue, alfalfa leaves for green, nut tree bark for brown, and pecan shells for tan. We visited Teotitlan del Valle in 2005 (we stayed at a wonderful B&B with Tony and Rebeca Raab) and fell in love with these rugs (no two are alike) so much that we decided to offer them to our customers. Here you see a few handpicked rugs from Oaxaca. These rugs are both work of art and function, and therefore will look great on either the floor or wall. Our rugs are from well known and established weavers. All rugs are hand woven and feature natural and aniline dyes. We have recently chosen some rugs made from different natural colored wools. These rugs will last longer, with no fear of color-fading, or the dyes running. All rugs are shipped FREE. If you have a special rug request, please don't hesitate to send us a note. Or you can visit our archives and see the rugs that have sold in the past. If you see something you like and it already has been sold, we will be happy to order a similar one. Additional pictures available upon request.
From our customers.... "... We really love the natural colors and are just thrilled with it. Thanks for sending us this treasure.." Bridget D., Ashville, N.C.
